Spelman was the senior partner of the firm of B. R. and R. L. Spelman of Albany, New York. From 1842 to 1858 he was the commander of the Albany Burgesses Corps, a military organization which had been founded in 1833. He was a member of the Histrionic Society of Albany, the Young Men's Association, and the Albany Institute.
