The artist (Mrs. Gerard Stuyvesant) was the grandmother of the donor and the great-great-great-granddaughter-in-law of the subject, the Dutch director general of New Netherland appointed in 1646. This likeness is copied from a 17th-century portrait of Governor Stuyvesant attributed to Hendrick Couturier.
