A native of Tennessee, Hull was a member of the state legislature from 1893 to 1897, and from 1907 to 1931 served almost continuously in the U.S. House of Representatives. He was elected to the senate in 1931, but resigned two years later to become secretary of state under Frankling D. Roosevelt. After retiring from the office in 1944 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace.
