The subject of this portrait was the son of Johannes De Peyster (b. 1626) and the brother of Abraham, Johannes, and Cornelius. His brothers had large real estate holdings and each held major civic offices in New York. Isaac was also a merchant in New York. Before coming to the Society this portrait hung in Teller Mansion, New York. The wife of the donor was a descendant of the subject.
