Medorah von Hoffmann was the daughter of Louis A. von Hoffmann, a banker of New York and a founder of the Knickerbocker Club. After their marriage in 1883 the Marquis de Mores and his wife spent several years in the Dakota territory where the marquis was imprisoned for killing a cowboy. After his release the couple went to France where the marquis established a reputation as a duelist; he was killed by his escort while crossing the Sahara to assist an Arab chieftain.
