DescriptionCast silver presentation trowel with a tapered, cylindrical handle engraved with a medallion surrounded by a laurel branch and engraved with the symbols of the arts, a harp, a book, a mask, ect. and a banner inscribed, "THE/ NEW/ THEATRE/ NEW YORK CITY" in roman letters; a curved stem and a diamond-shaped blade with a long pointed end; blade engraved, "IN COMMEMORATION/ OF THE LAYING/ OF THE CORNER STONE/ OF/ THE NEW THEATRE/ BY/ HIS HONOR/ MAYOR McCLELLAN/ DECEMBER XV/ MCMVIII" in roman letters; the names of the founders are engraved on the underside of the blade; makers' marks stamped on the underside of the blade.
