According to the accession records, this is a modern reproduction of a tricorn from the period of the American Revolution. It has since been identified as a "Confederate slough hat." The donor, John Ward Dunsmore, is said to have used it as a prop for his historical paintings.
DescriptionBrown felt hat with soft, slightly rounded crown with depression in center of top; wide, slightly upturned brim with cloth tape binding on edges; wide grosgrain ribbon band; turquoise silk lining and brown leather sweatband.
Markingsmaker's mark: printed on lining: "XAVIER DAVID / PARIS / 11, Place de la Bourse." (no longer visible)
