This dress coat was worn by Paymaster General William Smith.
DescriptionDark blue wool Paymaster General's double-breasted dress coat; 1 1/4" blue velvet closed stand-up collar (1 hook and eye), with metal attachments sewn to the shoulders to secure epaulettes, 1 loop on each shoulder near the outer edge just below epaulette; 4 sets of double buttons down each side; blue velvet closed false cuffs with 3 buttons at each wrist; 4 panels across the back of the bodice with 2 buttons near the center at the waistline, 1 button on each side of split skirt; 1 horizontal slit pocket inside left breast, metal clasp buckles on straps inside the waistline, coat lined with twill-weave silk, sleeves lined with white satin; all buttons cast with shield-breasted eagle, with 4 stars above, crest of stars below.
Markingsembroidered: on tag inside collar: "H. B. Barr" stamped: reverse of each button: "S. J. & CO. / LONDON"
