This Naval officer's dress coat was worn by E. J. Sadler. The Society also owns the other pieces to this uniform.
DescriptionDark blue or black wool Naval officer's tailcoat, with double collar and lapels, lapels have 4 buttonholes down the front, all blind but the upper left; 3 buttons on each side at the stomach; closed cuff sleeves have a band of gilt lace around the wrists with a metal 5-pointed star above; 4 panels at the back of the bodice with 2 buttons near the center at the waistline, a button at the bottom of each tail; all buttons cast with spread eagle clutching an anchor in its talons encircled with stars; lined with black silk, horizontal slit pocket at the left breast, sleeves lined with white silk.Markingsprinted: on maker's label inside breast pocket: "RICE & DUVAL / 231 BROADWAY, NEW YORK."
