This coat was worn by Major Edward Gibert Schermerhorn. It was made shortly before he took his post as Secretary to New York's governor on January 1, 1913. Schermerhorn resigned when the governor was impeached, but a Special Act of Legislation reinstated his rank and grade for life.
DescriptionDark blue wool Major's single-breasted coat with 2 1/8" closed stand-up collar (2 sets hooks and eyes), with Marjor's shoulder straps having a gold leaf on each end against a dark blue ground; closes down the front with 8 sets hooks and eyes, slit at each side at the hip; collar and outer edges trimmed with 2" flat black braiding, when fastened the 2 edges of braiding along the front meet; 4 panels on the back; dark (green?) twill-weave silk, vertical slit pocket on left breast, sleeves lined with white silk.MarkingsPrinted on tag in breast pocket: "BROOKS BROTHERS, / BROADWAY / NEW YORK. / Date / No."; tag in breast pocket handwritten: "Maj E.
