DescriptionTwo historical paper covered wax seals of the State of New York; the larger seal (a) has a rising or setting sun with human face above three hills and inscriptions in relief on one side, and a field of waving grass with a butte in the distance and inscriptions in relief, including the year "1777," on the other; the smaller (b) has two allegorical female figures flanking a shield and inscriptions in relief on one side, and a rocky island and inscriptions, including the year "1798," on the other; pale pink ribbon appears to be embedded in the wax of each seal.
Markingsin relief: on one side (obverse?) of larger seal: "THE GREAT SEAL OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK" and "EXCELSIOR" in relief: on one side (reverse?) of larger seal: "FRUSTRA" and "1777" in relief: on one side (obverse?) of smaller seal: "THE GREAT SEAL OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK" and "EXCELSIOR" in relief: on one side (reverse?) of smaller seal: "FRUSTRA" and "1798" handwritten in ink: on lid of box in which seals were found: "Great Seals of State of New York; pendant; / 1. - 1777-1798 / 2. - 1798-1809 / Carved ivory box, antique / with head of the Chev. de St. George / about 1707"
