According to the donor, the handwriting on the flag was done by his grandfather, the Fleet Surgeon for Admiral Farragut. (See correspondence of A. Kenny C. Palmer July 7, 1936)
DescriptionWool U.S. flag with thirty-three white cotton stars hand applied to the blue canton (three rows of seven interspaced with two rows of six stars); thirteen red and white stripes; linen hoist with metal grommets at either end and a bast rope strung through; hoist inscribed in brown ink.
Markingshandwritten: on hoist: "Shot away from one of Admiral Farragut's ships/ in Mobile Bay, August 5th, 1864, picked up during /the battle by Fleet Surgeon Palmer, visiting the wounded." handwritten: on one of the stars: "...(?)... J. C. P. ...(?)..."
