According to the accession records, this settee was used in the country home of the Reverend Samuel Jones (1737-1811), great-great-grandfather of the donor. However, the furniture was clearly manufactured after 1811. The donor's father, Robert Jones Henderson (1835-1884), inherited the settee and matching side chairs and brought the furniture to New York.
DescriptionWindsor settee made of poplar with greenish-yellow paint and fruit and flower decoration; open back with long, rectangular tablet and a single slat supported by turned spindles; slightly outswept arms supported by turned spindles and terminating in a scroll; plank seat with rounded edge; ring-turned legs braced by turned front stretchers and plain, rounded stretchers running across the rear and front to back.
