Admiral Leahy was born in Hampton, Iowa, the son of Michael and Rose (Hamilton) Leahy. He attended the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis from which he graduated in 1897. By the time the U.S. entered World War I he had risen to the rank of captain; by 1930 he had been promoted to rear admiral; and shortly before he retired in 1939 he was made chief of naval operations. He was chief-of-staff of the army and navy during most of World War II, and in 1944 was made admiral of the fleet.
