Art collector Luman Reed, an influential tastemaker and patron of the arts in the 1830s, regularly opened his home to entertain and showcase his collection. This soup tureen is part of the fashionable French porcelain dinner service that Reed would have used when dining with artists such as Asher B. Durand and Thomas Cole.
