In 1988, the Rainbow Room reopened after a two-year, $20 million-plus renovation. The restaurant complex atop Rockefeller Center was completely transformed by a team of prominent artists and designers, including Dan Dailey, who created a wall of cast glass; Hugh Hardy, who directed the overall interior design, including silk walls, green leather chairs and carpet, and revolving dance floor; and Milton Glaser, who devised colored screens for the room and designed the graphics and dinnerware. The bold plate design, featuring a spire piercing the sun, references Art Deco design of the 1930s but with a pure 1980s color palette. The dinnerware pattern was repeated on the cover of the Rainbow Room menu.
