Eiraku (b. 1795) was a well-known potter, located in Kyoto and active about 1810-45. Eiraku was known for producing patterned ware with exterior blue and white decoration, and with interior red and gold borders and ornament.
MarkingsBottom of bowl is marked in Japanese characters that translate as "Eiraku, Japan."

DescriptionLate-Edo period blue and white painted bowl ornamented along exterior with peonies superimposed on frieze of trailing flowers and foliage; a gadroon-style border is located along bowl bottom; interior is decorated at bottom with blue and white peony medallion; interior sides painted with two red and gold phoenixes, Buddhist symbols, and framed along lip with wide gold and red floral border.
