Pair of men's shoes with shoe bags
Leather, cloth
Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Wysocki
2003.14.4a-d
Paul Wysocki, an attorney who worked on the 57th floor of 1 World Trade Center at the firm Sidley, Austin, Brown & Wood, wore this pair of shoes during his escape on the morning of the September 11, 2001 attacks. He then walked to East 52nd Street, via the West Side Highway, to stay with a friend.
When he returned home, Wysocki threw the shoes in the trash because he did not want to keep things that reminded him of that day, recalling that many - particularly women wearing high heels - had taken off their shoes in order to move more quickly. His wife, Lisa Wysocki, retrieved them.
