In 1775 the subject, a native of Chester County, Pa., organized a regiment from local recruits and was commissioned a colonel in the Continental Army. Bold and courageous in battle, he was known as "Mad Anthony Wayne" for his daring maneuvers. He retired from the army in 1783 but in 1791 he was commissioned a major general by President George Washington. This portrait is apparently a replica of the original ordered by Wayne himself and later presented as a gift to Capt. George Warren Chapman.
