The subject was an Associate Justice of the New York Supreme Court (1904-07) and Governor of New York from 1807 to 1817; he subsequently served two terms as Vice-President (1817-25). This unsigned work is apparently a replica of a portrait painted by Sully for a Dr. Gillespie. The original, which is dated 1817, was in the collection of The Brook, New York, at the time the Society acquired this portrait as a gift from the subject's great-grandson.
