Laura Wallace Buchanan was the daughter of James Armistead Buchanan, a lawyer of Baltimore, and Rosa (Parran) Buchanan. She became the wife of J. Mayhew Wainwright, a lawyer of New York, on November 23, 1892. Her husband, who attained the rank of colonel in the New York National Guard, served as assistant secretary of war under President Warren G. Harding.
