Winfield Scott Schley (1839-1911) was the commander of the U.S. Navy's "Flying Squadron" until it was united with the "North Atlantic Fleet" under Admiral Sampson. At the Battle of Santiago, Schley was the commander of the U.S naval forces present, and fought the battle from his position aboard the BROOKLYN.
