The subject, who became a prominent lawyer in New York, was born in Providence, R.I., the son of William and Frances (Street) Hoppin. He graduated from Brown University, went on to study medicine, and served as a surgeon's assistant during the Civil War. He later attended Columbia Law School and was admitted to the bar; he began his law practice in New York in 1869. This portrait bust was a gift to the New-York Historical Society from his son.
