This coat is part of a uniform worn by Naval officer H. Maxson Holloway when he served in World War II. He served as Lieutenant from 1943-1945.
DescriptionWhite cotton duck Naval officer's single-breasted coat; 2" closed stand-up collar (2 sets hooks and eyes); black wool lieutenant's shoulder boards with 2 gilt stripes, 1/2" and 1/4", and metal embroidered 5-pointed star at the center, button at the collar end; 5 buttons down the front; breast pockets with flaps which button closed, color bar above left pocket; all buttons unmarked, cast with eagle clutching an anchor above 3 cannon balls, encircled by stars; closed sleeves, no cuffs; 4 panels across the back; 5" split at the bottom of right side seam which buttons from the inside with one button, 10" split at the bottom of left side seam which buttons from the inside with 3 buttons; coat unlined.Markingsembroidered: on label inside right facing: "S APPEL & CO. / CORRECT / UNIFORMS / NEW YORK AND MIAMI / SIZE 37 / SUPERIOR FABRIC / SANFORIZED SHRUNK / USE NO CHEMICALS IN LAUNDERING / DO NOT IRON WHILE WET"
