The subject of this miniature was the son of William De Peyster, Jr., and Elizabeth (Brasher) De Peyster. His sister Elizabeth was the second wife of Charles Willson Peale. In 1798, Peale painted a life-size portrait of the subject, which he mentions in his diary. The miniature was very likely copied from the larger portrait about the time the latter was painted.
