This plaque was issued following the election of Ulysses S. Grant and Schyler Colfax in 1868. The sentiment of the plaque expresses the desire of unity after the end of the Civil War.
DescriptionFramed oval plaque with copper bas-relief medallion portraits of George Washington (1732-1799), Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885), and Schuyler Colfax (1823-1885) on brown velvet in brass medallions on a steel plate engraved, "IN GOD WE / TRUST / THE / Union must and shall be preserved. / THE / PEOPLES / CHOICE / ELECTED / 1868 / NOV.R 3RD / 'LOVE & TEARS FOR THE BLUE' / 'TEARS AND LOVE FOR THE GRAY' / 'LET US HAVE PEACE'"; in wooden frame and matte, matte has Renaissance Revial type carving in the four corners; black painted accent on the frame.
