Miniaturist John Ramage arrived in British-occupied New York in 1777 and was active in the city until 1794. Trained as an artist in his native Ireland, he was also an accomplished goldsmith who made distinctive cases accented with gold beading and lively scalloped borders. This miniature, and a companion miniature (1906.2), depict Elizabeth Brasher Pintard and her husband, New-York Historical Society founder John Pintard. Brasher married John Pintard in 1784. The couple was among several distinguished clients Ramage painted in New York. The woven locks of hair backing each portrait emphasize the love and esteem the Pintards held for one another.
