The wood block upon which the spike is mounted may be timber fron the battleship U.S.S. Granite State, built in Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 1819. The ship was renamed the U.S.S. New Hampshire in 1864 and served in the Civil War.
MarkingsEngraved on brass plaque: "U.S.S. GRANITE STATE"; paper label affixed to back of wood block typewritten: "U.S.S. GRANITE STATE/[Keel?] laid Portsmouth, N.H., Navy Yard 1819; known as the Alabama until 1863, when she was named the/ NEW HAMPSHIRE / Launched 1864; served as a depo[---] ship during the Civil War. Places out of commission, 1892, and shortly after turned over to the N.Y. Naval Militia. In 1904, name changed to GRANITE STATE. Burned in 1921. / Gift of Admiral W.B. Franklin, 1931 / N.Y.N.M."; impressed in spike: "US"
