This fire bucket originally belonged to Rev. James Scrimgeour of Newburgh, New York, a distant relative of the donor.
DescriptionCylindrical black leather fire bucket with "J. Scrimgeour" painted in gold on one side; leather-encased rope rim and handle.
Markingstypewritten: on exhibition label found with object: "Leather Fire Bucket, early 19th century / owned by the Rev. James Scrimgeour of / Newburgh, New York / Gift of James A. Scrymse[sic], 1916" painted: on side: "J. Scrimgeour" newspaper clipping: affixed to bottom: "Scrymser-Scrymgeour / The presumed loss at sea on the / Pacific Coast of Henry M. Scrymser / of New York, brother of James A. / Scrymser, President of the Mexican / Telegraph Company, 37 Wall street, / as reported. The occurrence has no / other local interest than the fact that / the unfortunate gentleman was blood / relative of Rev. James Scrimgeour, / who, at the commencement of the / present century, was pastor of the / Associate Reformed church, and sub- / sequently of the Little Britain church / of the same denomination. The dif- / ference in the orthography of the / names arose in this way . . . ."
