Asher B. Durand

Remarks: After making a name for himself as an engraver, Asher Durand turned his attention to painting in 1835. Upon completing a year of study abroad, Durand's main subject became landscapes and he became one of the leaders of the Hudson River School of landscape painters. Before his death in 1886, Durand also helped found the New York City National Academy of Design, of which he also was president for a number of years. -Source:
