Beatrice Wood
Date: 1893 - 1998
Remarks: Beatrice Wood was born in San Francisco in 1893. She studied briefly at the Academie Julian in Paris, but decided to pursue theater instead. She returned to the United States in 1914, where she joined the French Repertory Theater in New York. She was introduced to Marcel Duchamp in 1916, and became an important member of the circle around Duchamp and the New York Dada group in the teens and 1920's. In 1928 Wood moved to California, and in 1933 began her involvement with ceramics. She studed with Glen Lukens at the University of Southern California circa 1938. The 1970s and 1980s proved to be Wood's most productive decades for her ceramic art, and in 1978 there were three concurrent exhibitions of her work.
