Martin Wong
Date: 1946-1999
Remarks: Born in Portland, Oregon, and raised in San Francisco, Wong arrived on New York's Lower East Side in 1978. He was a graffiti enthusiast and entirely self-taught as an artist, employing an idiosyncratic language that combines Asian calligraphy and decorative arts, American antiques, zodiac signs, and manual alphabets for the deaf, along with allusions to the street graffiti, Nuyorican poetry, and hand-lettered signage he encountered daily in his neighborhood. After a complex, colorful career, Wong succumbed to AIDS in 1999.
