Edith Wharton

Remarks: Edith Newbold Jones was the daughter of George Frederic Jones and Lucretia Stevens (Rhinelander) Jones. Miss Jones married Edward Wharton, of Boston, considered one of the nation's most distinguished writers. Mrs. Wharton was a noted author whose career spanned 3 decades, among her novels are "Ethan Frome" (1911) and "The Age of Innocence" (1920). She was a resident of France for many years and made an officer of the Legion of Honor. In America, she gained membership in the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and awarded a gold medal of the National Institiute of Arts and Science.
