John Tyler
Date: March 29, 1790 - January 18, 1862
Remarks: First Vice President to elevate to the Presidency after the death of a predecessor; President 1841-1845; served in the House of Representatives 1816-1821 and opposed the Missouri Compromise; he later became Governor of Virginia and was a Senator from that state as well; he believed in states' rights and a strict interpretation of the Constitution; banded with other states' rights southerners to form the Whig party to oppose Jackson; 'Tippecanoe and Tyler too' was the slogan that he and William Henry Harrison ran with. When he died, Tyler was a member of the Confederate House of Representatives.
