Peter Townsend

Remarks: Peter Townsend was the son of Peter Towsend and Hannah (Hawxhurst) Townsend. He married Miss Alice Cornell, daughter of Comfort Cornell. The couple were the parents of: William H. Townsend, Peter Isaac Townsend, Robert C. Townsend, George E. Townsend, and Elizabeth Townsend. He followed his father into the manufacturing business and in the management of ironworks. The firm produced the one-hundred-ton iron chain that was stretched across the Hudson in 1778 to prevent British ships from passing above West Point. It also manufacturered the first anchors used to equip American frigates during the Revolution.
