George Tooker

Remarks: George was the son of bond broker, George Clair Tooker, and the former Angela Montejo Roura. After spending his childhood in Bellport, Long Island, he obtained his preparatory education from Phillips Academy and his B.A. from Haravard. He then went into military service. After he was discharged in 1943, he enrolled in at the Arts Student League of New York where he studied for two years under Reginald Marsh, Harry Sternberg, and Kenneth Hayes Miller. He was also a student of Paul Cadmus and Jared French. Tooker won recognition early on as an extraordinary painter and by 1947 was exhibiting at the Whitney.
