Augustus Toedteberg
Date: 1824 - 1909
Remarks: Toedteberg came to New York from Germany in 1844. He was active in the dubious and highly criticized field of "extra-illustration" and inlaying, in which an artist inserts drawings in already bound, often rare and collectible books. His daughter, Emma (1856-1936), was a noted librarian at the Long Island Historical Society in Brooklyn, his son Louis was a bookbinder in Brooklyn, and his other daughter was Louise. His wife, Catherine died in 1905 at the age of 84.
