Samuel Jones Tilden
Date: 1814 - 1886
Remarks: As a lawyer in NYC, he helped exposed the notorious Tweed ring and the "Canal Ring." Later became governor of NY; Ran for President as a Democrat against Hayes in 1876. Tilden received the majority of the popular vote, but the electoral votes were contested. A commission was set up to decide the vote and Hayes won the presidency. When he died, Tilden donated a large amount of money for the founding of a free public library in NYC. In 1895, his money combined with Astor's and Lenox's to create the NYC Public Library.
