William H. Taft

Remarks: solicitor general under Benjamin Harrison; made a Federal Circuit judge by the age of 34; civil administrator in the Philippines; Secretary of War under Theodore Roosevelt, who decided that he wanted Taft as his successor; President 1909-1913; Law Professor at Yale until he was made Chief Justice of the Supreme Court by President Harding; It was his dream to be on the Supreme Court; he served from 1921 until 1930; the only man to be both President and Supreme Court Justice; during his presidency, amendments allowing for the direct election of Senators and a federal income tax passed, New Mexico and Arizona joined the Union, the parcel post was created and a separate Department of Labor was created.
