Remarks: The LURE (Leather, Uniform, Rubber, etc.) was a gay leather bar that stood at 409 West 13th Street in the Meatpacking District from 1994–2003. During the 1970s and 1980s, the area’s activities by day centered on the area’s industrial activities, including meatpacking. By night, gay bars and nightclubs, sex clubs, and transgender prostitutes held sway. The LURE was the last of such establishments to remain as gentrification began to transform the area in the mid- to late 1990s.
