Gilbert Stuart
Date: 1755 - 1828
Remarks: Went to England in 1775 and 2 years later was an assistant in the studio of Benjamin West. He quickly became one of the foremost portraitists in fashionable London circles. He returned to U.S. in 1792 and for 2 years worked in NY. He then went to Philly where he painted his three celebrated and much copied portraits of Washington. After a period in Washington, DC (1803-1805) he settled in Boston where he remained the rest of his life
