Harriet Beecher Stowe
Date: 1811 - 1896
Remarks: Mostly known for her novel 'Uncle Tom's Cabin,' Stowe was a writer of fiction, housewifery manuals and a mother of seven children. She and her sister, Catherine, encouraged women to learn better housewifery skills or to become nurses or teachers (when not married). 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' helped galvanize the abolitionist cause right before the Civil War. The book was a bestseller and one of the many causes that contributed to the Civil War. Stowe was also an abolitionist.
