Richard Morell Staigg
Date: 1817 - 1881
Remarks: Portrait, miniature, genre, and landscape painter. In 1813, he came to America and settled in Newport, Rhode Island, where he studied painting from Jane Stuart. Afterwards, he was a student of Washington Allston. Staigg first exhibited in Boston in 1841, where he spent most of his career. He worked in Baltimore in 1845 and in NYC in the 1850's. He gave up miniature painting in 1862 to devote himself to oil and crayon portraits. In the later part of his career he painted landscapes and genre. He was elected an Associate of the National Academy in 1856 and a full member in 1861.
