Ephraim George Squier

Remarks: Ephraim George Squier was the son of Rev. Joel Squier of New York. He was self-educated after grammar school. Early in his career as a journalist, he moved to Ohio, where he became interested in Indian mounds. In 1847, he co-authored "Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley," the first publication by the Smithsonian Institiution. After which, he wrote "Aboriginal Monuments of the State of New York (1851)." Mr. Squier was appointed charge d' affaires to Central America. After his term he published many more books about travel and the exploration of Central and South America.
