Alfred E. Smith
Date: 1873 - 1944
Remarks: Alfred Emanuel Smith, whose formal schooling ended with grade school, became an important figure in New York state politics in the early 1900's. He served in the New York state assembly, as president of the New York City Board of Aldermen, and as governor of New York from 1918 to 1920 and again from 1922-1928. In 1928, Smith ran as the Democratic candidate for president. Smith, a Roman Catholic (and the first presidential candidate to be so), faced much prejudice in the very ugly campaign. Ultimately, Smith lost the election and ended his career in politics, choosing instead to work as the editor of New Outlook magazine and the president of a business firm. He died in 1944. -Source: http://www.bartleby.com/65/sm/Smith-Al.html
