Emily Sloane

Remarks: Emily Thorn Vanderbilt was the daughter of William Henry Vanderbilt, grandson of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, and Maria Louisa (Kissman) Vanderbilt of New York. Miss Vanderbilt married William Douglas Sloane (d. 1915), a corporate officer. The couple had five children among them Emily Vanderbilt Sloane (Mrs John henry Hammond 1874-1970). After the death of their son William Sloane (ca. 1886), Mr. and Mrs. Sloane founded Sloane Maternity Hospital (now Sloane Hospital for Women) as a memorial to his memory. After her husband's death, Mrs. Sloane married Henry White, a diplomat and U.S. Ambassador to France and Italy, in 1920. Mrs. White's philanthropy benefited many organizations including: Vanderbilt University, Young Man's Christian Association (YMCA), Young Woman's Christian Association (YWCA), and St. Barthalomew's Church, New York.
