Remarks: Served with the army of the Potomac during the Civil War, he distinguished himself in several battles before being taken prisoner by the Confederates; Founder of the Salmagundi Club and its Librarian; best known as an author, he wrote- "A Man Without Memory," 1895, "The Last Three Soldiers," 1897, "The Three Prisoners," 1904, "The Jumel Mansion," 1916; he was appointed the Curator of the Jumel Mansion in 1908
