William Shakespeare
Date: 1564 - 1616
Remarks: William Shakespeare, considered the greatest playwright who ever lived and who is the single most quoted author in the world, emerged on the London theatre scene in 1592. Shakespeare's plays and poetry were very popular during his lifetime and he enjoyed a favorable career, being granted a coat of arms, and being a member of the King's Men acting troupe for all of his life. In 1613, Shakespeare, then a part owner in two theatres, the Globe and the Blackfriars, retired to Stratford, where he died three years later. Shakespeare's most famous works include Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Comedy of Errors, Hamlet, Othello and a number of sonnets, among other things. His plays are still performed around the world today, and scholars have been fascinated with his work for centuries. -Source:
