John McGarvey Prewitt
Date: 1883 - 1957
Remarks: Dr. John McGarvey Prewitt was from Kentucky. He was commissioned as a First Lieutenant in the Medical Corps in 1818 and was sent to Hoboken, N.J., the Port of Embarkation for assignment overseas. However, because of the flu epidemic, he was instead sent to Camp Mills Base Hospital near Mineola, Long Island, to treat flu patients. The 1918 flu epidemic, which claimed the lives of 12,000 New Yorkers, was one of the worst outbreaks ever.
