John Muir
Date: 1838 - 1914
Remarks: He traveled extensively throughout the mid-west and westward toward california, studying and recording observations on botanical specimens and was one of the first to explore the Yosemite Valley along with Robert Underwood. Johnson proclaimed it a National Park in 1809. Muir wrote several books concerning forest conservqation and was influencial in encouraging president Theordore Roosevelt to establish a federal forest reserve
